Colours of Spring: Celebrating Pohela Falgun

Pohela Falgun, a Bengali festival, celebrated in Bangladesh and West Bengal, India, heralds the arrival of spring. Pohela Falgun means the first day of the month Falgun in the Bangla calendar. Celebrated on 14 February, the festival is deeply rooted in Bengali tradition.

As the winter's chill begins to give way to the warmth of spring, the grounds of Dhaka University’s Faculty of Fine Arts come alive and the air is electric with excitement as its students eagerly prepare to welcome the spring. The entire campus is transformed into a lively canvas of colours, music, and creativity.

The students showcase their artistic talents in a multitude of forms, and the campus wears a festive atmosphere. Traditional Bangla folk songs and melodies fill the air. Students sing, dance, and recite poetry. The rhythm of the drums and the lilting tunes evoke a sense of nostalgia and cultural pride.

There is a riot of colours all around as students and attendees alike don traditional attires in shades of yellow, orange, and red. Their vibrant clothing and accessories (e.g., floral wreaths worn around their heads) present a stunning spectacle.

Colour powders and flower petals are thrown in the air and at one another, creating an enchanting scene. Friends and strangers alike join in the jubilation. Traditional Bangladeshi sweets, such as pita (steamed rice cakes stuffed with coconut and palm sugar), and other delectable treats are shared among participants, adding a delightful culinary dimension to the festivities.

The celebrations are more than just a series of events; they are an embodiment of the rich cultural heritage of Bangladesh. The celebrations leave an indelible mark on all who partake in the revelry.
